Q: How to buy Insulin in London?
I’m a type 1 diabetic and I’ve just arrived in London. I have to buy Insulin, but they won’t accept the prescription from my doctor in Brazil. I tried to go to the doctor and get a new prescription, but they want to charge me £200 for a simple consult. What to do? I use Lantus and Humalog.
A: I am afraid these are both prescription only medications and GPs in London are much more switched on to treating foreign nationals privately than they are in the provinces. Unless you strike lucky with a sympathetic GP you will just have to cough up.
Q: How does everyone afford to treat Diabetes?
I’m asking because my boyfriend is recently diagnosed with Diabetes. The past two months, with all the Metformin, Avandia, Lantus, Novalog, needles, gauze, alcohol, meter strips, etc. We are struggling. His health insurance only provides $1200 gross towards prescriptions PER YEAR. We are very quickly coming up on that $1200 and it hasn’t even been 6 months. I’m curious to know, are we doing something wrong? Why can’t we afford this treatment? It seems like a good many Americans have Diabetes, how does everyone else afford the many prescriptions? We’re freaking out, because we don’t have the money for rent, gas, food, etc. We feel like the Diabetes treatment has to come first, but all these co-pays for specialists and prescriptions has drained our wallets, we can’t buy food, nevermind entertainment. How does everyone else afford this?! What can we do?
A: I am a BSN/RN and I cannot believe some of these answers. You have quite a few good ones from intelligent, helpful people. Then you have Guy R (please see this website about reusing needles. I can’t tell you how many ulcers I have treated on diabetics for this very reason. http://www.childrenwithdiabetes.com/d_06_341a.htm) telling people it’s ok to reuse your needles. IT ISN’T!
But the most idiotic has to be “doowopper” with an IQ of about 12. Pull your head out of your bottom and educate yourself about diabetes. It is a DISEASE. You can’t just change your diet and make it go away. “i bet that his sugar is out of control”. Do you really know so little about a disease that affects 230 million people worldwide? Please don’t answer any more questions that require your brain to function.
Q: I am a 23 year old type 1 diabetic who has no insurance and and very little income. How can I get my insulin?
I filed for SSI and was denied and now I have lost my insurance. I am currently not working. I am taking Lantus and on average it is $85 a bottle. I am trying to find a way to get help with getting it because I have to have it and cannot afford to buy it.
A: Many of the pharmaceutical companies offer medicine assistance programs for people who cannot afford their medications. I’m not sure who the manufacturer of this particular drug is, but you should try contacting the pharmaceutical company and asking them if they have any programs that can help you with this problem.
Q: I am not so rich to throw away a vial of lantus or humalog after 28 days?
As a case of IDDM i use 600 unit of humalog and 750 unit of lantus insulin per month .according to the datas lantus and humalog should not be used after 28 days from unpacking. I bought a bvial of humalog Euro 36.86 and lantus Euro 50.00. I can not afford after 28 days of usage throw away my insulin.the manufacturer must make them in a way that they would be valid for min. 2 month.
ANYHOW DO LANTUS AN HUMALOG WORK EXACTLY 28 DAYS NOT MORE. IS THERE A WAY FOR THE PEOPLE LIKE ME WHO CANT AFFORD ?
A: I am also Type 1 diabetic and have been in a situation where I can not afford to throw the medicine away. Here is what I recommend.
Lantus – keep it refrigerated. By leaving it out it tends to spoil quickly. I have successfully used and not had a problem for 2 months.
Humalog – I have also used it for more than 28 days. Since you need to have humalog at room temp for use it is harder to keep it refrigerated.
Keep in mind the 28 days is recommended. However, you usually have at least a month more. If you are going past the recommended days watch your blood glucose levels. If you notice it takes more insulin to do the job or it is not working throw it out.
Since you mention finances and diabetes is a rich man disease – talk to your doctor and see if you can get samples that the drug companies provide (Not sure if they do this in the UK however they do in the US) or see if there is a program where you can get free medicine from the manufacturers (another program in the US).
Good luck.
Q: How can I use humalog insulin with NPH ?
Congratulation for diabetes day.
I use humalog as bolous and glargin-Lantus as basal.but now I have no more lantus but have still humalog for 1 year. since I can not afford to buy Lantus anymore due to high price.is it possible I use humalog with NPHinsulin which is cheaper.please dont reffer me to doctors .they are not available .thanks
Now I use 27 unit lantus at bed time and 8 to 10 unit humalog before each meal. But I have no lantus anymore in few days time.
A: Yes you can, humalog should be used 10-15mins before each meal, I dont know know what dosage you should be on though and then you should check you blood sugar after eating and then do a sliding scale injection with humalog if sugar is above 200. And just use your NPH like you always do. You just have to use NPH more often then lantus, I think in the morning and evening, because lantus lasts 24hours and NPH doesn’t last that long. I dont know what dose you should be using though.
Im not sure what the conversion would be. Might want to start out with 20 units of NPH in morning and evening and watch for hypoglycemia and increase the dosage as you need too.
Q: Should I use an Insulin Pump?
Hi, I am a type 1 diabetic and 18 years old, I just got diagnosed a year ago. I was wondering if I should buy a pump, some worries are that I am pretty active in sports: Rugby, lots of exercise, and I am thinking about maybe going into MMA (mixed martial arts). Would it be more of a help or a burden with the pump? By the way I take Novolog and lantus. I’m pretty sure that my blood last time i went in was at 7.5.
A: It would not be a burden at all. Actually, it would make your life easier. I know two sisters whom are very active and they wear insulin pump and they said they wouldn’t have it any other way.
Q: where can I get prescription diabetes drugs cheap without prescription??
Hi everyone I am looking for a prescription only medication for diabetes called Lantus. I am wanting an aussie script for it. My cat has feline diabetes and if I buy a vial from my vet it costs me over $200.00 dollars. I am wanting to know if there is anyway I can get my hands on a vial for less??? Does anyone know a dodgy doctor on the mornington peninsula that would right a script or are there any web sites that you can buy medications through . I know this sounds dodgy but I want to try anything for my cat but money is an issue. Any help would be appreciated thanks
A: Hey, the stuff ain’t cheap. My long lasting costs me $200.00 also. You may be able to find a druggist that will give it to you without a prescription, but they charge even more. At least that has been my experience. You either get the stuff without a script and pay more, or go to the vet, get a script, and still pay a lot.
