Q: What would happen if i take Lamotrigine with alcohol or marijuana?
Not that I am going to run out and do that, just curious but i am taking Lamotrigine for Juvinele myoclonic epilepsy. I just recently started taking it and i am starting off on a very low dose and working my way up. I heard some things like i may get dizzy with alcohol. I am 18 and going to college next year, just wondering what i should do or if alcohol would have terrible side effects.

A: Patients should avoid alcohol and CNS depressants (medications that make one drowsy or tired, such as antihistimines, sleep medications, and some pain medications)and cannabis, while taking lamotrigine. Lamotrigine can exacerbate the side effects of alcohol and some other medications. Alcohol may also increase the risk or frequency of seizures.
Ask your prescribing Dr or a pharmacist if 1 drink would be ok,better to be safe than sorry!!!

Q: How long does it take for Lamotrigine aka Lamictal to kick in?
I have took my first 25mg today prescribed for my Bipolar Disorder and i feel good, like balanced and normal. Is this a good day or effects of the Lamotrigine already??
Has anyone experienced it kicking in this fast?
Thanks.

A: It depends. With my Husband first dose he felt it kick in right away, but now he is on 350 mg and it took a week before he started noticing a difference and can take up to 6 weeks to feel the full effects.

He usually feels the effects of the meds pretty quick.

Q: What are the effects of Lamotrigine and alcohol?
I’m on 125mg of Lamotrigine and I was wondering what would happen if I drink alcohol?
The normal dose is 200mg so that should be taken into consideration.
Thank you.

A: I take 100mg of Lamotrigine twice a day and when I used to drink I would skip my P.M. dose. I can’t say for sure what it would do to you but I would get horribly nauseous. I can usually drink a pretty good bit but if I took Lamotrigine and drank within a few hours I would get drunk fast and sick. I take it for bipolar so missing a dose is no big deal but if you take it for seizures I don’t think you should skip it. I don’t think my answer helped but here’s some info.

Q: Does Lamotrigine and Duloxetine helps to improve my mood and my dizzyness?
Does Lamotrigine and Duloxetine helps to improve my mood and my dizzyness?and is there any side effect should i take any other medicine instead of this?

A: i have no answers but it is a good question.
I just started taking this med. The dr started me on 1/2 pill every day for 2 weeks, then 1/2 pill 2X a day for 2 weeks, (then i think 1 pill per day).

Q: What is the difference between Lamotrigine and Lamictal?
I am taking Lamotrigine but now I was prescribed by my neurologist to take Lamictal which is the same thing under a different name.

A: Lamotrigine is the generic version. They’ve only recently (last year or so) come out with it. Much less expensive than lamictal.

Q: Epileptics taking lamotrigine – how do you feel if you run out of it temporarily?
I have found that whenever I run out of lamotrigine (because my prescription can’t be filled quickly enough) I suffer from the following symptoms: extreme anxiety, insomnia, loss of appetite and greatly increased seizures.

I didn’t have these symptoms before I started taking the drug, so what is it doing to me? I know that lamotrigine is given to people with bipolar or similar disorders, but I don’t have any of these.

A: I thought my son, was cured of epilepsy, and whine him of lamotrigine, at first his behavior improved, then he got worse again, very obsessive. Now the fits are back.

You may like to try another medication, or get the prescription filled a week before it runs out, if you can. When he was still having fits, it would only take 48 hrs after missing a dose for him to have fits again.

If you try another medication, whine yourself off really slow, by like 1/4 of a pill every two weeks, so your body doesn’t feel the effect. I’m not sure what else you can try as my son has been on this medication for 5 years. I found that it changed him, and the one previous to him starting lamotrigrine made his behavior really bad.

There is an alternative to anti- fit medication, its a diet which is high in fat and protein

Q: how long does lamotrigine stay in your system?
I took 3 lamotrigine tablets, 150 mg each (yes I know that was a very stupid thing to do, and I’m never going to do it again). I took them at about 7:00 or 8:00 last night and this morning I’m still dizzy and all weird feeling from it. Does anyone know how long it will take to get out of my system? I feel horrible and I have to puke. Any advice or info is much appreciated.

A: After multiple dosing (in volunteers who took no other medicines) of lamotrigine the elimination half life is noted to be between 11.6 to 61.6 hours.

The elimination half half varies with other parameters. Please see link below.

http://www.drugs.com/pro/lamotrigine.html

For lamotrigine to be totally out of your system it would take 5.5 half life’s (5.5 x 61.6 hours (max)) i.e. 338.8 hours (approximately 14 days). This is using the maximum time and could vary with change in other parameters.

WHAT I LIKE TO DO:
The best way to make you feel better is to cut a lemon in half and squeeze it into a cup and drink it. If you have stomach pains, then this might help. Also a teaspoon of honey would do nicely.

NOTE:
You may reject to the lemon because its ’sour’, but trust, it helps.

WARNING:
Lamotrigine may give you serious skin rashes.

Hope this helps – Hope you get better soon!

Q: dose Lamotrigine drug affect side effect or it is good to take as anti-depressed medicine?
Iam using Lamotrigine and Duloxetine HCL tablets for depression,is this drug can really cure my depression and my mood developement?pls advice me in details.
which medicine can cure my depression fast?
Does this medicine can cure depression so fast without any side effect?

A: Anti depressants give you a bit of a break whilst your depression passes. This can take a very long time. To maximise the benefits of this rest period you should try to get to the bottom of the cause of your depression and try lots of relaxation methods. Anxiety is normally caused by worrying about the future, and the future only exists in your head. Try to spend more time concentrating on what you are doing now and the mind will be to busy to waste time thinking up different futures, all ore none of which may or may not happen.

Q: what are your experiences with Lamotrigine?
Just wondering if taking Lamotrigine worked for you, how you felt before & after taking it, and what you are diagnosed with.

plz no answers saying drugs are just a scam for doctors to make money, blah blah. this is a serious, important question and i am just curious about how it has worked for other people since i am going to begin taking it next week.
THANKS!

A: I first started taking Lamotrigine after trying many unsuccessful treatments of anti-depressants. I was classified as having treatment-resistant depression. I didn’t think things would ever get better or that anything could work. My doctor decided to try Lamictal (lamotrigine). To my shock and surprise, things gradually didn’t seem so bad anymore. I was in a good mood, the things that used to upset me didn’t, and I finally felt like I was experiencing life. It was like someone lifted this black veil from my eyes that I didn’t even realize was there.

I was later diagnosed with Epilepsy after I started having seizures. My neurologist increased the Lamictal because it’s an anti-epileptic and of course I was already on it for the mood disorder. However, once the dose got to therapeutic range for seizures, I was tired, lethargic, and couldn’t function. My neurologist told me the other epilepsy medications were even worse in symptoms, and told me to stay on it. However, at such a high dose, lamotrigine was wrecking my life. So, I stopped going to the neurologist and reduced my dosage slowly. It was a dramtic improvement.

I’m sure you can see why I’m a fan of this medication. The side effects are usually milder than most antidepressants and the only thing I experienced was a lot of dry mouth. I know for bipolar I, Lamitcal is often ineffective alone. However, I know many people who have had success with Bipolar II and this med… and of course, for treatment-resistant depression.

Q: How much of a Lamotrigine overdose is fatal?
I’ve read that deaths have occurred, but does anyone know what the actual amount could be? My guess is an entire 3 month’s supply… I can’t imagine that a person could live through THAT.

A: Toxicology is not clearly established in humans. In animals, the LD50 is somewhere between 250mg/kg (200mg is the ‘average’ daily dose of lamotrigine) when injected to 650 mg/kg when given orally. It’s really hard to guess Lamotrigine is not a very toxic drug by most standards – there are reports of human overdoses in excess of 5000mg with only mild symptoms, there have been fatalities though.

Lamotrigine has a huge dosing window. Between 25mg/d at starting doses, and I’ve seen as high as 800mg/d in certain epilepsies.

The main risk with ODing is seizure, coma, and inducing Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, which is on the list of top ten most horrible things that can ever happen to a person.

Q: How has Lamictal or Lamotrigine worked for you in managing bipolar?
Curious to hear how well this medication has worked for others, as well as any comparisons to other medications used in treating bipolar.

A: I use 100mg a day but not as a mood stabiliser, but for the anti depressants qualities. My normal mood stabiliser is Lithium. I can’t take normal antidepressants as they make me manic.

I have not had any problems with Lamictal.

Q: how long does it take for lamotrigine to work for epilepsy?
I have not been on lamotrigine long. only 2 & a half weeks ago my Dr increased my dosage as I was still having seizures on my lower dosage. on my new higher dosage I am still having seizures which are strong & pain full. is this just because the medication has not kicked in yet? do seizures have to get worse before they get better?

A: I’m now on the generic L also on Topomax. I have JME and without further info on your particular epilepsy I can’t give exact details, I will give you what I know. When I first started on L I was taking 150mg twice daily and it worked for a year, then JME did it’s thing and made it worse. It was up’t to 300 twice daily. Same thing happened we added Topomax, then again so now I’m at 450 mg L and 200mg Topomax both twice daily and I need to go and change what I’m taking to something better. What I’m getting at is that it should work at least for awhile when your at the right dosage. Call your neurologist! No need to panic for now as long as you’re not in a room with sharp things ;) when you have a seizure or hot things(I burned myself on very hot chicken nuggets).

Q: What does Lamotrigine Lamictal made you feel ?
My doctor had prescribed for me Lamotigine Lamictal , and I want to know only from people who had been on it , how did it make them feel ?
And is it a good drug Yes/No ?

P.S : anti.Depressent didnt work with me hoping this would !

A: i am on this medication and it doesn’t really make me feel up or down….am a bit blank at times but i take it at night……..be really careful….if you notice a rash notify your dr immediately.

Q: How many MG of lamotrigine does it take to get high?
My daughter has been getting high on her meds and I want to take her meds away from her and only give her as needed.
Also I haven’t dicused this subject with her therepist yet.
I am afraid he will very well take her off her xannax too.
She is bipolar and suffers from depression and panic attacks.
I need to know this so I can monitor her usage,
Thanks

A: You can not get high off of lamotrigine but taking large doses of it can make you very sick…… Xanax however you can get high off of AND it is very addictive. Talk to her therapist.

Q: If I come off lamotrigine myself how long does it take for me to stop feeling the effects of it?
This involves me going from 100mg a day to none overnight.
I am on it for Borderline Personality Disorder as a mood stabiliser.

A: Any withdrawal of a medication for a mental health condition should be agreed by your doctor. Lamotrigine should be reduced over a period of 4 weeks i.e 100mg, 75mg, 50mg & 25mg. The symptoms associated with withdrawal are blurry vision and fatigue.
