Q: TELMISARTAN ( MICARDIS) side Effects – Coughing & Back Pain???PLEASE HELP!!?
My Mom is taking telmisartan and she is experiencing severe back pain, coughs all night , bruises easily and doesn’t get much sleep. We are worried about her health. She just looks like she feels bad. I want her to go to the doctor but she is scared to go. She is 63 and takes care of of my grandson and has been active but in the last 5 months she just is not the same. Do you think it could be due to the telmisartan she is taking for her blood pressure? She is worried that something is very wrong in her health when all it could be is the medicine she’s taking. Any suggestions???

A: Micardis may cause cough, even though it would be rare. It is not known to cause back pain.

Coughing may be due to other causes, such as pneumonia or bronchitis. There are plenty of infection going around, especially as a result of kids going back to school. This is the start of the cold season. She may cough so hard that she may sprain her back.

Call your mom’s doctor NOW or take her to a minor ER to be evaluated. Don’t stop Micardis unless specifically told by her doctor.

USES: This drug is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). This drug works by blocking the hormone angiotensin thereby relaxing blood vessels, causing them to widen. High blood pressure reduction helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems.

OTHER USES: This drug may also be used to treat congestive heart failure and to help protect the kidneys from damage due to diabetes.

HOW TO USE: Take this medication by mouth, usually once daily or as directed by your doctor. You may take this drug with or without food. Use this medication regularly in order to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, use it at the same time each day. Do not take potassium supplements or salt substitutes containing potassium without talking to your doctor or pharmacist first. This medicine can raise your potassium levels, which rarely can cause serious side effects such as muscle weakness or very slow heartbeats. Tell your doctor immediately if these effects occur. The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy. For the treatment of high blood pressure, it may take 4 weeks before the full benefit of this drug occurs. It is important to continue taking this medication even if you feel well. Most people with high blood pressure do not feel sick.

A: I have taken this medication in the past for high blood pressure. It did make me cough. Many BP meds do make people cough. My doctor switched my medication, but I did not have any back pain. She should see her doctor to find out if it is coming from the medication or not. She should definitely see her doctor. Please click below links for side effects, etc.

Q: Does anyone have any experience with Micardis?
Today, I was given sample packets of Micardis (40 mg telmisartan). I am hesitant to start taking it right away without seeking a second opinion, in part because I’ve heard once you start taking a medication for high blood pressure, you can’t stop (or risk even more serious damage). Is this true?

Further, while on this type of medication, activities/diet is limited. Since alcohol is avoided, does this mean all alcohol must be avoided?

A: I take micardis and i haven’t had any major side effects from it, and i also drink two beers a day without any adverse effects.

Q: Should this pill be used?
If you were using MICARDIS (Telmisartan) which is a drug that reduces blood pressure by blocking the actions of a chemical that causes blood vessels to constrict or tighten, would it be safe to use another drug (Amlodipine Besylate)
would it be safe to combine the two? when taking them…

A: Telmisartan is an angiotensin II receptor antagonist, and Amlodipine Besylate is a calcium channel blocker. they have different mechanisms of action and it is not uncommon for someone with hypertension to be prescribed 2 different classes of medication.

yes- they can be taken at the same time.

Q: what is micardis HCT?
telmisartan hydroclorothiazide

A: I have read your question very carefully and I felt the frustration of not being able to ask you a few probing questions before answering. However, I would at the very least like to email you a few things to consider that will at least offer a few things to consider and may offer additional aspect for your consideration…with your permission first!

Q: Is my Doctor trying to kill me?? 4x usual dose erythromycim and fluconazole?
also given micardis (telmisartan) and spiriva – question is the dosage of the erythromycin seems too high and I have read that fluconazole is a bad companion and can cause death when combined with erythromycin? The report I read was from 2004 perhaps there is more recent? I am having severe stomach trouble from the antibiotic is this due to excessive dose two 250mg four times a day? Should I just trust the doctor and follow orders without question?

this link is article on the mixing of these drugs

A: The best thing to do is talk with your pharmacist…they know much more about effects/contraindications of prescription drugs than your Dr. does, and are the best resource you have in a situation like this. You can call and talk with him/her on the phone and get all of your questions answered.

Q: Can I take medications while Juice Fasting?
Alright, I myself have actually just finished a 3-day Juice Fasting and my mom wants to do the same. She has a bit of a tummy from having had 3 kids- I’m 20 now. :)
The thing is, she is 50 and taking the following medications:
Ciprofloxacin HCL 500mg (antibiotic)
Diltiazem HCL 360mg (lowering high blood pressure)
Telmisartan or Micardis (lowering high blood pressure)
Pravastatin Sodium (lowering cholesterol)

Most of the medications say to take with food.
She still insists on going through with it. I’ve done a bit of research and supposedly Juice Fasting should actually improve on things like her blood pressure and cholesterol but she takes her medication every night and is afraid to miss a day or three. Another reason she wants to go through with the Juice Fasting is that she’s afraid taking so many medications every night is doing quite the number on her liver.

I’ve asked her to consult her doctor as well but she’s Chinese, very old fashioned, and goes to Chinese speaking doctors that are either new to the concept or shoo away the idea of a juice fast altogether, saying things like that it’s baloney.

I guess my question is… should she continue taking her medications during the juice fasting period? Should she cut down to half a tab? Should she take them every other day? Should she not take any medication at all?

A: She should not stop her medication without her doctor permission.
I just happen to be reading a book by John H. Tobe
GUIDEPOST to HEALTH
AND
VIGOROUS LONG LIFE
Fasting
The famous Plutarch wrote, “Instead of using medicine, rather fast a day.” He says first of all, lets us define fasting. According to the best knowledge that I could gather, it is temporary abstinence from all food, and herein I want to emphasize that this does include water. I fully realize that in some quarters water is regarded as food and I am quite in agreement with that interpretation. However, for the duration of this text we will keep water separate. We will accept it as not being a food and therefore, fasting means the abstinence from all food. Another term, and one that is being widely accepted, is “physiological rest”.
The purpose of the fast is to allow the body full range and scope to fulfill its self-healing functions to its best advantage. The body is more capable of self-healing than any other force or forces on the face of the earth.
Please allow me to emphasize that fasting in itself contributes absolutely nothing in a material way to the healing of the body, but it does permit the body to become 100% efficient in healing itself.
At this time I would like to make a positive and definite distinction between starvation and fasting. They are in no way connected or related.
Starvation is denying the body essential food for its maintenance and is positively and definitely injurious and often fatal, whereas sensible fasting is temporary abstinence until the surplus or stored fats are consumed and harmful accumulations are eliminated and it is remedial, restorative and healthful.
While I make it clear and positive that fasting itself dose not cure anything, I wish to point out some of the things that fasting does accomplish simply by enabling the organism to do what it needs to do for itself.
1.Gives overburdened organs rest and time to rehabilitation.
2.Sharpens and accentuates the mental faculties.
3.Improves the intestinal organs’ ability to digest and assimilate
food.
4.Conserves essential energy.
5.Promotes the breaking down, absorption and elimination of various
abnormal growths and obstructions.
6.Allows the organs of elimination time to void accumulated matter.
7.Creates a feeling or condition of euphoria.
8.Making the mind receptive to logic and sensible correct way of
living.
9.Promotes the elimination of inorganic chemical accumulations that cannot be divested from the body by any other means.
