Q: Has anyone who does not have epilepsy or migraine taken topiramate to reduce weight?
My dr. last week prescribed me topiramate while i am on Abilify (aripiprazole) to reduce weight that i have gained after taking antipsychotics. I put on 17 kgs in 3 months. I have tried dieting and exercise for 4 months with no success. If i take it for weight loss, how safe is the drug? how much weight loss should i expect to have? or should i go for other drugs like metformin, orlistat to reduce my weight?

A: As far as I am concerned, and what I know for a fact that a whole lot of doctor would agree with, Topiramate is not an acceptable method of weight loss. Yes, I take this drug and in the last year I have lost 65 pounds. I don’t know what that is in kilograms, but it is a significant amount of weight and the problem is that you lose weight because you cease to be hungry and your body starts burning fat because it is being starved of proper nutrition. Same way you would lose weight if you were smoking crystal meth everyday. The problem is whether you are hungry or not, your body still needs food energy to continue functioning. Not only is starvation unhealthy for you, it also is not going to teach, encourage, or enforce healthy lifestyle choices so when you stop the medication you will gain back everything you lost and more. Eventually I started getting really weak and dizzy to a point where I was having a hard time functioning and staying on my feet. I am not taking this drug to loose weight, and I know for sure that none of my doctors would ever agree to prescribe this drug for that purpose. I am in the process of tapering off this drug and in less than a week I will be off it entirely. Another thing you should keep in mind about this drug is that it is well known for impairing your cognition which means your IQ score will drop if you were keeping track, your memory will be compromised, and so will your communication skills. It also messes with your sense of taste and I can’t really eat anything sweet anymore because it tastes weird.

I am not preaching about this, just sharing my experiences. I am schizo, I take several drugs that are reputed to cause weight gain such as Risperidone and Lithium, and I have been taking psychiatric drugs for the last ten years that allegedly cause weight gain including the worst of the worst, Olanzapine, and also Quetiapine, Depakote, and who knows what else. In addition to this, I have issues with my weight that are not just superficial and effect how I look at the beach, I have serious health problems including liver disease that are directly affected by my weight in a negative way. These drugs are not magic. They do not defy the basic laws of physics that govern the rules that every type of energy in the Universe must follow. Fat doesn’t just pop up out of the clear blue sky and the pills themselves don’t have calories. You gain weight because you are consuming more calories than your body can use. I have proven to myself in my own experiences that it is very possible to get to a healthy weight while you are taking these drugs if you have the will. I have dropped significant amounts of weight and got my blood sugar and liver functions under control while taking doses of Quetiapine that exceed the strength of doses that the manufacturer and the government have deemed safe. I am not saying it is easy, but it is definitely possible and is far more healthy than eating once every 3 days like I do on Topiramate.

Q: Switching from Topamax to generic topiramate for seizure control?
Due to health insurance issues, I have been forced against my neuro’s advisement to switch to the generic for topamax for seizure control. I am wondering if anyone out there has had any adverse side effects when doing this. I have been on Topamax for 7+ years now and all side effects of the drug had weaned off. However, within 24 hours after making the switch, it is like I have never taken the drug before.
Has anyone else encountered this experience?

A: Generics don’t always have the exact same amount of medication in them. The dose may need to be adjusted. They also may have different fillers in them you could be allergic to.

A: No you must not

Q: I have been diagnosed as bipolar, and my doctor has put me on topiramate 25mg with effexor 150mg?

A: It will take a little while for the effects of the medication to set in. If you feel there is no good effect or outcome go straight back to your GP or Psychiatrist!

good thing about bipolar it does give you a lot of creativity – so start painting and writing it will be excellent! A good thing you can do anyway is doing regular exercise, if you have the time try at least 20 minutes a day walk briskly or jog outside in the daylight until you sweat a little bit and feel your heartrate goes up – in trials physical exercise significantly decreased levels of depression inducing disturbances of serotonin levels in the brain!

Your Psychiatrist should have talked about your illness and given you some information, if you haven’t received much helpful information there is lots on the web. The more you know about it and about your medication the more likely it is that you can return to as normal a life as possible as soon as you can, but you first should accept that fact that it is your diagnosis, it doesn’t make you any worse or different! And how reliable is it? Like if you’ve had a headache every day for three years and absolutely NOTHING has worked, how good of a chance is there that this stuff will work?

A: Yes, especially in the first several weeks. It gets better after that. For the first month or two, you will notice your spelling is bad and you feel stupid as a rock. I never had one migraine while on topamax (topirimate). I was taking 200mg. Make sure you drink lots of water as topamax can cause kidney stones. I would also take a multivitamin as anticonvulsants can cause vitamin defiencies.

Q: Is one of the side effects of Topomax [Topiramate] having really weird, unrealistic, vived dreams?
Or even just having dreams every night? Before I took it for my epilepsy i hardly ever had any dreams or hardly ever remembered them at least. If anyone takes Topomax it would be great to hear if you know anything about its side effects towards dreams.

A: Yes, Topomax can cause you to have weird dreams along with other medications. Every person will have different side effects, but dreams is 1 of them, be careful don’t take too many.

Q: Has any one every been prescribed Topiramate and or Sertraline and if so?
what one, and how did it work out for you? What were the side effects? I just got a prescription today for it and will be starting it tomorrow and just want a little in sight of what to expect!

A: sertraline for anxiety disorder i took it for 6 months helped a small bit but not really for me and gave me change in blood pressure and loss in sex drive..

A: Topiramate can make you lose weight. If you are not overweight, then at the dose you are on you wouldn’t lose very much if anything at all. It is approved treatment for acute mania, the prophylaxis of mania and migraines. It has shown great results (though the studies for migraine where done with 100 and 200mg).

A: Seriously?! Hahah. I just started taking Topamax for bipolar disorder.

I haven’t noticed any headaches, sorry if that wasn’t much help.

Edit: One of the side effects for Topamax is nausea, so you might want to be on the lookout for that. I had some on the generic version.

Q: How common is Topamax (Topiramate) prescribed?
I’m doing my research and I found that this medication doesn’t tend to cause weight gain and extreme hunger. I have a huge appetite anyway so getting an antidepressant that causes hunger is not the greatest for me. Anyone on this medicine? Do doctors usually prescribe this as much as any other?
I;m not looking to lose weight, i’m only 100 pounds, and i never tend to lose my appetite, even on my adderall, i just don’t want something to make me even MORE hungry then i already am.

A: It is NOT a weight loss drug.
Topamax is an anti-seizure medication. It is also now approved for migraine headaches.
I took Topamax for about 5 years, and it did reduce the severity of them. Last year I started getting muscle twitches all over my body, that turned out to be a side effect of the Topamax- they thought I may have had MS. That is a very uncommon side effect tho. Commonly fatigue is a big effect, as is tingling in hands & feet.
If you do have seizure or migraine it would be worth a try.

A: Weight loss while on topiramate (Topamax) is a well documented side effect. The weight loss usually begins at doses around 100mg/day but can be noticable at doses as low as 50mg/day. An undesirable side effect is difficulty with memory.

I was on a dose of 200mg twice a day and had severe memory impairment, something in my profession I could not tolerate, and weight loss. I am down to 100mg twice a day and have no appreciable memory impairment and have lost 50lbs.
